Wireless Music Server

K I feel like a total nerd: I had an extra desktop computer on my hands (besides Chase's desktop & our laptop), so I decided to use tech-nerd-ology and make a wireless music server out of it. I wanted to be able to listen to my mp3 files on either my home stereo, garage stereo, or outside speakers. I also set up our wireless internet on it too, so I can download new music files straight to this server, access internet radio, etc., throughout the house.

I already had all my mp3 files on an external USB hard drive, so I just copied them over to the new computer. Then I setup a wireless audio transmitter on the computer, and connected its receiver to the living room stereo. I sent all the computer audio out to this transmitter, so when I load playlists on Windows Media Player or Music Match, everything plays on the stereo receiver in the living room. I also have a full stereo in the garage (because evidently I need music EVERYWHERE) so I can send it out there, too. Oh I almost forgot, its got a remote, too. So I can adjust volume, skip songs, repeat, pause, even switch from mp3 to internet radio from wherever I am.

The beauty of this setup being wireless is that it can be located anywhere around the house. Since its an 'extra' computer, I don't want it taking up space around the main living areas . Not that I've decided where to put it yet. For now, since I've been setting it up, its in my dining room. Doesn't quite go with the decor :(

  1. Awesome use of technoloy. I'd personally suggest putting the machine next to your tv. Then you can get a creative video blaster and then you've got tivo. Now, it's possible you already have tivo, in which case, nevermind.
